OU ConocoPhillips ConocoPhillips School of Geology and Geophysics wins 3rd place in Imperial Barrel Competition and takes home the Stoneley Award, a 5,000 dollar prize.For the first time ever, the Imperial Barrel Award came to the AAPG Annual Convention. Imperial College in London has been offering the prestigious Barrel Award for the past 30 years. This year AAPG offered the competition and awards at the Annual Convention as the Imperial Barrel Award. The results of the competition were announced at the Student Reception on April 2, 2007 and the top three teams won generous cash prizes. The University of Oklahoma, ConocoPhillips ConocoPhillips School of Geology and Geophysics Team won the Stoneley Medal, third place, behind two United Kingdom colleges. The OU Barrel Award Team Members are: The OU team was coached by Dr. Roger Slatt, Dr. Larry Grillot, Dr. Roger Young, Dr. Randy Keller, and Jan Dodson. Universities from around the world, offering masters-level degrees in petroleum geosciences, were invited to participate in this competition. The IBA competition provides a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable experience by participating in an exploration evaluation, presenting to a panel of senior industry experts and competing to win scholarship funding. This group competition consisted of a global exploration geoscience project focused on the assessment of the petroleum potential of a basin. Teams were provided a complete data set and had a few weeks to complete a technical assessment of the basin’s petroleum plays and prospects. On the Friday prior to the convention, teams gave a thirty minute presentation of their work with recommendations for future activity.
